I’d never, in my entire life, had a woman cut me off so suddenly and completely until Adrianna. I was absolutely astonished. She dodged my calls, my texts, my emails. She managed to avoid me when I showed up unannounced at her office. I was sure she was there, but her assistant was ever-so-professional when she told me each time that Adrianna was out of the office, or in a meeting. On one hand, I was relieved that she was – at least physically – alright. On the other hand, I was incensed. How could she be so proud?

I wanted to tell her what she already meant to me, how much I wanted to be with her. She was everything I’d ever wanted. I knew it was early in the relationship, I knew it seemed impulsive, but no woman had ever affected me like Adrianna. Our conversations, the way she looked at me, not to mention the sex! As soon as I heard her come, I knew I was done for. No person, in any capacity, had managed to take control away from me so effortlessly.

I had to get the fuck out of here. I decided that instead of wallowing in self-pity, I’d continue with my plan to go to Greece, and I made arrangements to have my yacht in Athens staffed and prepared for the trip. I was ready to fly out in two days, planning to meet up with some friends in Greece and party my way up to Venice, where I’d stay at my villa for a few days. I needed to decompress, and couldn’t think of a better way to do it.

I was at my desk checking my email when Frank Healy called me, and I almost didn’t answer. He had always been a great mentor and friend but his call made me think about Adrianna and I didn’t want to fucking deal with it. Still, he’d been good to me in the past, and it would be irresponsible of me to dismiss his call.

“Hey, Frank,” I said, tucking the phone in against my shoulder as I continued to peruse my emails. “How’s it going?”

“Levi,” Frank answered. “I’m doing alright, I guess. I just thought I’d give you a call, since you’d expressed interest in Adrianna Shaw’s charities.” I felt my stomach knot and I swallowed hard.

“Oh?” I asked, trying to sound casually disinterested. “Well, I had planned to get in touch with my manager and have him make a donation to the foundation, but hadn’t gotten around to it, yet. Thanks for reminding me.”

“Well,” Frank said, his tone growing more serious. “I was actually wanting to ask you if you could help me out. I just had to pull sizeable funding from her new project, and well – it’s going to devastate them. I had promised to back the entire opening costs, but had an unexpected downturn this quarter, and I just can’t do it.” He paused. “I was hoping you could see your way to cover my portion.
